3.2.4. Rules for registering .UA domains
To register a .UA domain, it is necessary to have a trademark (TM). Trademarks are registered by the State Enterprise "Ukrainian Intellectual Property Institute" (Ukrpatent): the standard procedure takes approximately 2 years, while the expedited process takes 9 months.
Domain registration for .UA is only possible if you have a registered trademark with a name identical to the domain. This is a mandatory requirement.
Important points:
- To register a .UA domain, it must be done from an account registered to the trademark owner. To register a domain from a different account, a license contract must be concluded between its owner and the trademark owner.
- In the account, in the "Personal data" section on the "Personal info" tab, the address must be filled in.
- Domain registration for .UA is carried out on a special page.
- The .UA domain cannot be registered using an application number (usually looks like
m******); a fully registered trademark is required. - A new invoice for registration can only be generated by contacting tech support.
Detailed information about TM registration and the specifics of registering a .UA domain is presented in our blog:
Key points
- The administrator of the .UA zone is the company LLC "Hostmaster".
- Domain registration rules in the .UA zone are the same for all registrars.
- A .UA domain can only be registered if there is a registered and active (not expired) Ukrainian trademark or an international trademark that is protected in Ukraine in accordance with the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks.
- The domain name must match the trademark for goods and services as it appears on the TM certificate. Only certain special characters may be omitted, but not individual letters or words. The order of characters in the domain name must be preserved, and characters should be read from left to right and top to bottom. Adding characters that are not present in the trademark is not allowed.
- The domain name may only use Latin alphabet characters, excluding special characters such as
&,@,.,/and others. Such symbols can be replaced with their English names or removed. If the TM logo contains Cyrillic characters, they should be transliterated. - Domain registration in the .UA zone is possible for only one year; subsequent renewal can be done for a longer period.
